Slide Rules for Sale

Brand New Slide Rules

These slide rules were purchased from retail stores or distributors or from collectors who bought them from a retail store or distributor. They have been unsold on store shelves for 35-40 years and the boxes show shelf wear. Boxes have been opened and the rule may have been examined a few times by prospective buyers but it has never been in daily use. The edges are sharp and the markings are crisp. All the original documents and accessories are included. Except for rules described as "in original factory plastic," new rules have been freshly cleaned and aligned. (But don't count on the rule maintaining alignment on its trip to you.)

Slide rules in original plastic bags have not been cleaned or aligned. Some collectors, including myself, like having rules that have been sealed since they left the factory. However, 35-40 years of storage have effect even on slide rules in sealed plastic bags: The metal end brackets have dulled; the stators are usually out of alignment and some gritty material has deposited the celluloid surface. The rules can be returned to 1970 condition with a wipe-down of Windex and metal polish on the end brackets. I will be glad to do that for you but it will delay shipment for a few days.

Hemmi 34RK Five-Inch
Pocket Mannheim

Hemmi's "thin" pocket version of desk model 50 slide rule. Scales A [B, CI, C] D, K and [S, L, T]. Plastic cursor provides moderate magnification.    Rule carries Odelco trademark on back; case has ODELCO embossed in gold.

Rule and case are brand new (rule is still sealed in factory plastic). Instructions are a new Xerox copy.

Hemmi 80K Electro Slide Rule

Hemmi's most interesting closed body slide rule. Designed for analysis of motors, dynamos, and other electrical devices. Scales E, F, A [B, CI, C] D, LL2, LL3 and [S, L, T] || K. (The K scale is on the bottom edge of the slide rule and is read with the aid of a tab projecting from the bottom edge of the cursor.) The E scale is for calculating the efficiency of dynamos and motors; the F scale is for calculating voltage drops. Gauge marks at 28.7 on the A and B scales represent one half the specific conductivity of a copper wire 1m long and 1mm² in cross section. Cursor has three hairlines for easy conversion between watts and hp. Complete with two-piece green Hemmi case, original factory plastic bag and newly copied instructions.
These rules have never been used and show no wear; I opened the original factory sealed plastic bags myself. But they date from the very first year this model was manufactured (date code "DI") and have been stored for 55 years. Overall appearance is good but there is some yellowing and close examination reveals a few spots of flaking plating on the cursor.

Engineering Slide Rule

Hemmi's only pocket duplex slide rule--very similar to Post 1461 Pocket Versalog. 22 scales: LL/1, LL/2, LL/3, DF [CF, CIF, CI, C] D, LL3, LL2, LL1 and L, K, A [B, TI, SI, C] D, LL0, LL/0.

Hemmi 257L Chemistry Slide Rule

Ten-inch duplex bamboo slide rule for chemists and chemical engineers. Front scales (L, K, A, DF [CF, CIF, CI, C] D, LL3, LL2, LL1) are designed for efficient multiplication, division and exponentiation. Rear scales (Ch A-M, Ch N-Z, M1 [M2, T^oF, T^oC, T^oK, LM] mmHg, Kg/cm², in hg Vac, t_w) are designed for calculations involving molecular weight, temperature and pressure. For example, the first two scales constitute a table of molecular weights; setting the hairline on "H₂O" automatically places the hairline on 18.3 (the molecular weight of water) on the D scale. There are many other calculations which I don't understand but you can figure out since it comes with an instruction manual. Complete with brown leather Hemmi flip-top case.
Small ODELCO trademark on front of rule plus "HEMMI JAPAN NO. 257L" on back. Frederick Post model 1491 Chemistry Rule was based on an earlier version of this rule.

Rule is all “Aristopal” plastic. Case (imprinted “ARISTO Germany”) is top-quality imitation leather sewn over a plastic frame. The Aristo #1364 “Scale of Preferred Numbers” is a varnished pasteboard ruler containing several logarithmic scales for plotting logarithmic graphs and a table of important constants and conversion factors.
These slide rules came directly from the distributor; they have never been used. Edges are sharp; lettering is crisp. No scratches, chips or dings.   However, 40 years of storage in their cases have had effect: Color from the brown plastic end brackets has migrated onto the white body plastic; this appears as a brown stain near the fasteners at the left end of the slide rule in the picture. (Picture shows typical.) It is possible that this staining will disappear in time. The varnish on the #1364 “Scale of Preferred Numbers” has melted and cracked in places. Although the cases appear in mint condition they are somewhat brittle. Some of the boxes are crushed at one end (picture shows worst box); best boxes ship first.

Scales are LL01, LL02, LL03, DF [CF, CIF, L, CI, C] D, LL3, LL2, LL1 and LL00, K, A [B, T, ST, S, C] D, DI, LL0. In addition to full width hairlines, there is one auxiliary hairline on the front of the cursor and three on the back. Rule is all “Aristopal” plastic. Case (imprinted “ARISTO Germany”) is top-quality imitation leather sewn over a plastic frame. The Aristo #1364 “Scale of Preferred Numbers” is a varnished pasteboard ruler containing several logarithmic scales for plotting logarithmic graphs and a table of important constants and conversion factors. These slide rules came directly from the distributor; they have never been used. Edges are sharp; lettering is crisp. No scratches, chips or dings. However, 40 years of storage in their cases have had effect: Color from the brown plastic end brackets has migrated onto the white body plastic; this appears as a brown stain near the fasteners at the left end of the slide rule in the picture. (Picture shows typical.) It is possible that this staining will disappear in time. The varnish on the #1364 “Scale of Preferred Numbers” has melted and cracked in places. Although the cases appear in mint condition they are somewhat brittle. Some of the boxes are crushed at one end (picture shows worst box); best boxes ship first.	Brand new and unused.
